Soccer for Deaf Children: |
|
|
|
'Hear The Cheer' is a specialist scheme set up by David Campbell Celebrity Soccer Schools and sponsored by hearing aid manufacturer, Phonak UK - with match funding from the Sportsmatch Award Scheme. The aim is to enable the deaf community to become involved more fully in football. Most of our full time staff take part in deaf awareness training and BSL level 1 sign language courses, allowing them to communicate with, and understand the needs of, people with hearing impairment. |

'Hear The
Cheer 1' was launched during a live Aston Villa versus Arsenal match in front
of a crowd of 45,000 cheering fans. Televised live on Sky, 100 deaf children
took part in pre-match entertainment and a lap of honour. ‘Hear
The Cheer 1’ offered coaching programmes to deaf schools in
England and the scheme was granted further Sportsmatch funding and
significant additional sponsorship by Phonak UK to continue with the
next stage of the project - ‘Hear The Cheer 2’.
Offering single day 'soccer experience' events for deaf children
at mainstream schools throughout England, the scheme is the first
of it’s kind in Europe. Minister
for Sports, Richard Caborn, taking part in the graduation ceremony of 26
children completing a 'Hear The Cheer' programme in Southport, Merseyside announced
he felt 'totally inspired by the project'. ‘Hear The Cheer’ has won the Government-backed ‘Sportsmatch Special Award’ as the best disability project across all sports throughout England, plus the prestigious ‘Sports Industry Award’ as ‘Best Sport in the Community Programme’.
